What the TWEET is going ON?

As I sat this morning enjoying a few minutes of quiet before the kids woke up nice and late thanks to our spring break schedule, I clicked on my favorite morning news show. Imagine my shock to hear what was all the buzz. “Tweet us here on Twitter and tell us what you think.” And, there on the screen, were all the morning show hosts entering their tweets by blackberry, by phone, by computer keyboard. It was not the first television reference I heard to Twitter either. Just the night before Mary Hart and proudly proclaimed her love of all things chirpy announcing their Twitter ID as well.

What the hell? I felt a sense of infringement. How dare all these TV celebs and movie stars move in on my blogging world’s fun tools and gadgets?

It was a bizzarre feeling, knowing I’d been on Twitter for some time, although I wasn’t using it as much anymore. Like I’d won a professional ballroom dancing show on TVwhen it was on PBS, before DWTS became a network hit and everyone knew about it.

I felt like an old bitty who wants to loudly complain, “Back in MY DAY, the mommy bloggers MADE Twitter what it was. There was no publicity tweets and bombarding of product announcement! We tweeted about ingrown hairs and baby diaper blowouts and we LIKED IT. We LOVED IT, I tell you!”

Just a month before, I’d somehow gotten invited to a mommy blogging convention put on by advertisers geared towards understanding what bloggers want from marketers. The irony in this was that I’d sort of quit blogging almost completely before this conference. And, in talking with a few bloggers who remembered me there, there was this overall sense of “are we selling out by even being here?” This gray area between marketing and blogging has become even more convoluted as marketers latch in.

And, the complete hypocracy in this blog post is that my latest gig I actually got from being a mommy blogger, so who am I to complain or act indignant really?

Still, I’m left wondering if this explains the place I’m in, or if I’m in this weird but natural progression of my blogging several years now. Have I reached a blogging midlife crises?

It certainly seems like other blogging pals who have blogged the same amount of time as me are feeling the same way I am these days. Perhaps we all need to just buy ourselves fancy looking blogs, and show them off a bit, and then go home and get back to the business of writing while we pluck gray hairs and wish for less wrinkles? Then again, perhaps this too, shall pass…
