The candy? It’s not always sweet…
So, I’m pretty open when it comes to music and my kids listening. I often have it on the local pop or rock station. I don’t allow my kids to listen to songs with bad words or bad messages, but I kind of think it is cool that my son loves ZZ Top (he doesn’t listen to ALL of ZZ, no worries!) and most classic rock. He is already starting to not like pop, which is a problem because I am definitely a bit of a pop princess.
So, I was kind of happy when I bought the new Cristina Aguilera greatest hits CD and he commented that he liked several songs. I skipped over Dirrrty, which is a great workout song, but obviously too sexy for a 9- and 4-year old.) One song that I didn’t already know, Candyman, was his favorite. It was a fun sound–a remake of the old wartime song.
Today, I was listening to the song as I cleaned when I realized that this song, no matter how sweet it may come across in title, is FILTHY in wording. And, I do mean, filthy. (I linked the lyrics, because I don’t feel like drawing all kinds of pervs to my site via search engine.)
When I shared the words with my husband, he got a good laugh. I really got off lucky that we were chattering in the car when the song was on, because my son definitely really listens to the words of songs and will frequently ask what things mean. This is one I do NOT want to have to explain at this point in my career as mom.
So, learn a lesson from me, people. Don’t assume a remake is OK. And candy references? Well, lets just say anything can be made suggestive. Sugar cane, anyone? (wink)

In some ways, I'm a walking cliche--a suburban mommy blogger of two kids just trying to keep my crazy yet wonderful life in balance. But, I'm also a career writer who has just returned to fulltime work in the software industry, I'm a wife going through a divorce after almost 20 years of marriage, and I'm discovering that life is full of surprises. But, mostly I am learning to look at the world through funny glasses with my tongue sticking out. Pfffftttt!
