The balancing act…

One thing this quest for fitness has taken me on is a journey for better balance in my life. I’ve always been bad about over-committing myself everywhere. I help others so much that then I’m a basket-case and have no time for myself.

One might thing choosing to stay at home with your children is making a choice to have that time for yourself, but it was not for me, nor is it for many of my stay-at-home mom friends. They are some of the busiest people I have ever met and keep their churches, schools, and children’s activities running. I am convinced the world would not be the same without this segment of society to keep it moving along outside of corporate America.

One funny thing that I have noticed is that when I start working out heavily, as I am right now, and eating better, I not only feel better, but I balance myself better. I have to make some choices about what I’m doing with myself. I am forced to say no to some things, like lunches out with girlfriends or volunteer needs at church or my kids’ schools. I still participate, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not spread all over the place because my gym time forces me to NOT be. And, really, that’s a good thing.

The past week or so I’ve gone to bed at a reasonable time more days than I’ve stayed awake. I’ve started reading books again. I’ve got plans to start back up with my scrapbooking. All of this when, ironically, I’m busier than ever with my weight loss program and working out. It is amazing how things fall into place when you get yourself to a better place physically-speaking. You wouldn’t think that jogging on a treadmill or consistently doing a cycle class could help fix so many other things, but for me it does. For me, that’s how I try and keep balance.

This balancing act is something I am far from mastering and I have a feeling it will always be my struggle as that’s just a part of my personality–as a Type A, “doer” type of person. But, focusing on health seems to help me keep the balls in the air a little longer and juggle them a little more steadily.
